What Time Do You Get Up?
February 6th, 2007 | Author: Nick Macey | PermalinkI admit it: I’m really a night person. I hate getting up in the morning, and I am rarely, if ever, in bed before 2am. I would be extremely happy if the regular work day were from 2pm - 12am. I guess it might be a college thing. But I’m really starting to think I might need to change my habits after reading this article by Jim Citrin about the sleep habits of CEO’s. Apparently, 80% of the 20 CEOs he talked to get up at 5:30 or earlier. The CEO of PepsiCo reads 4 newspapers before work every morning. Are these the secrets to success? What time do you get up?

Anywhere from 6-8:30am, depending on how long I was up the night before.
Nick, I can relate with what you’re saying. Back in the glory days I was all about the late nights and late mornings. Even still, some of my best ideas come when I am burning the midnight oil. But those occasions are rare. The only time I can play a little hoop these days is 6am, and with the kiddies running things from 6:30 to 9pm, the only time I have with my wife is from 9:30-11 or so. In summary, I’m turning into an old man — early to bed and early to rise.
I can’t remember the last time I went to bed before midnight. I don’t know what it is, but about 9:00 at night, something clicks in my brain and I shift into hyper-productive mode. Whether it’s because there are no distractions or my biological clock, I can’t imagine giving up that productive time.
Nick, due to a New Years resolution I have been getting up at 6:00 to try to lose some of the holiday weight. However, I think that will die off soon and my old habits will kick in. I have found that I have time to catch up on reading and am more productive between the 8:30 -5:30 work period. Give it a shot.
